Chelsea player ratings: Gilmour, Abraham take chance, Ziyech struggles

helsea eventually overcame a dogged Barnsley side to book their place in the FA Cup quarter-finals thanks to Tammy Abraham’s goal in a 1-0 win.

Crucial early save denied Brittain from point blank range. Had Abraham to thank for a clean sheet with a goal-line clearance later.

More comfortable when switched to left back after starting in a back three, which saw him struggle to play out of defence.

Has waited for his chance, but Tuchel will not be happy about the way Barnsley managed to open Chelsea up. More authoritative in a back two.

Chelsea struggled to play through the Barnsley press and he was one of the men sacrificed as Tuchel switched to a back four.

Made little impression as an attacking threat in a poor first half all round for Chelsea.

Wore the captain’s armband on his first start under Tuchel, but struggled to get control in the first half. Had far more of an influence after a change of system in the second half.

So bright again. He is always looking to make things happen and it was his ball that opened up Barnsley in the build-up to Abraham’s opener. A smart first half pass should have earned Chelsea a penalty, too.

Took time to get into the game and began to cause Barnsley problems as he committed them when moved into a more advanced position in the second half.

Still to reproduce his early-season form. Inch-perfect set-piece should have seen Chelsea open the scoring – but Rudiger could not hit the target.

Did not have enough of an impact on the game as he failed to find a way through the Barnsley defence.

Got a deserved goal for his constant movement as he tried to create space. Chelsea didn’t find his runs often enough. Goal-line clearance from Sollbauer’s effort topped off a good night’s work.

Antonio Rudiger (Christensen, 46’) 6

Came on as Chelsea switched to a back four and looked far more solid as a result. Should have hit the target with a header from Ziyech’s dead ball.

Reece James (Alons0, 46’) 6

Brilliant run and cross for Abraham to score. Offered Chelsea an attacking outlet they lacked on the right.

Tino Anjorin (Ziyech, 68’) 5

Came on to try to open Barnsley up, but ended up having to defend as Chelsea held on.

Mateo Kovacic (Pulisic, 80’) 5

Spent the last 10 minutes trying to keep Barnsley at bay.

Unused: Caballero, Giroud, Chilwell, Azpilicueta, Bate
