Chelsea player ratings: Werner and Kovacic hooked in dismal display

James Robson runs the rule over Lampard’s players…

Badly let down by the players in front of him for both goals with James and Kante both giving away needless fouls – but positioning could have been better when caught out by Saka’s mis-hit cross and then got away with a potential howler of a clearance late on.

Started brightly with a brilliant cross that almost presented Abraham with golden chance. But his clumsy challenge earned Arsenal and penalty and set up a miserable evening for Chelsea.

Can’t take the blame for Chelsea defensive collapse – but it was a bad day all round for Lampard’s rear-guard.

Failed to organise those around him in the manner he has for so much of the season and missed two really good chances with his head.

Made a miracle recovery to even play – but the attacking threat just wasn’t there.

Utterly ineffective before being taken off at half time as Lampard looked to turn the game around.

Guilty of conceding a free kick in a dangerous area, from which Xhaka doubled Arsenal’s lead. Nothing like as dominant as we expect from him.

Hit the post with a first half free kick and then won a penalty late on as he refused to give up.

Some dangerous runs frightened Arsenal as he committed defenders early on. Visibly frustrated with the lack of service he received, but kept trying to make things happen.

Given precious little to work with, but kept plugging away and got a late goal for his efforts.

It’s now 10 games without a goal and his confidence looks like it is beginning to seriously take a hit. Maybe it’s time to take him out of the firing line like Havertz.

Jorginho (Kovacic, 46’) 4

Didn’t give Chelsea the midfield control they craved – and then missed from the spot.

Callum Hudson-Odoi (Werner, 46’) 6

Added much-needed penetration and set up Abraham’s consolation.

Kai Havertz (Kante, 74’) 5

Chelsea were at their best with him on the pitch.
