Chelsea transfer news: Lampard needs ‘next Heskey’ as Havertz ‘regretting’ move

Frank Lampard is expected to strengthen again in the January transfer window with his Chelsea side still some way from challenging for the Premier League title.

Chelsea spent more than £200million in the summer on the likes of Timo Werner, Kai Havertz and Ben Chilwell among others.

But the Stamford Bridge side have dropped out of the top four after losing three of their last five top-flight matches while winning only one of them.

While some of their summer signings have settled in well, Werner and Havertz are currently struggling – and that’s a conundrum for Lampard as he ponders how to get the best out of his squad.

Here are the latest Chelsea transfer rumours.

Yussuf Poulsen could help Timo Werner get back to his best form

Chelsea need ‘next Emile Heskey’ for Werner to thrive

Chelsea have been urged to sign a striker in the mould of former Liverpool star Emile Heskey in order to get the best out of Timo Werner.

Werner has not scored in his last 11 games after joining Chelsea from Leipzig in a £47million switch in the summer.

And former Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino has told Frank Lampard that the Germany star’s former Leipzig team-mate Yussuf Poulsen is the kind of player who can get the best out of the 24-year-old.

“I’ve seen a lot of Werner and when he was at Leipzig he played alongside Poulsen who is a big centre-forward, and he played off the left of him and thrived,” Cascarino told talkSPORT.

“It’s a bit like Michael Owen; Michael Owen without Emile Heskey was never going to be the same player.”

Havertz ‘regretting’ Chelsea move

Kai Havertz has struggled to replicate the form that earned him a £72m move

Timo Werner is not the only summer signing who is struggling since making the move to Stamford Bridge.

Kai Havertz joined Chelsea for a whopping £72m but has so far failed to show the kind of form that saw him star for Bayer Leverkusen.

Havertz has been restricted to a subs’ role for recent games, and German journalist Raymond Hinko reckons the 21-year-old will be wishing he had joined Bayern Munich.

Writing in Sport Bild, he said: “Kai Havertz, even if he doesn’t say it out loud, will have already cursed a 100 times that he moved from Leverkusen to the midfield bores of Chelsea, following the lure of money.”

He added: “Havertz will have kicked himself often enough for not returning Bayern’s interest.”

Simeone tight-lipped on Alonso plans

Marcos Alonso could be on his way in the January transfer window

Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone was giving nothing away when asked about a potential move for Chelsea left-back Marcos Alonso.

Alonso has been linked with a January move to Atletico, having dropped down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge and fallen out with boss Lampard.

Simeone has often played with wing-backs and three centre-backs this season – a formation that would suit Alonso’s strengths – and it has been reported that the defender could head to the Wanda Metropolitano on loan.

But when asked about the claims, Simeone simply said: “I am not talking about what is being said from the outside.”
