Chelsea’s squad has clicked into gear under Frank Lampard this season, after an influx of summer signings.
The Blues were the biggest spenders in the Premier League ahead of the 2020/21 season, with new arrivals such as Timo Werner and Edouard Mendy bedding in and helping Lampard’s team mount an early challenge at the top of the table.
They could end this weekend in first place if results go their way, though a meeting with league leaders Tottenham won’t be a walk in the park.
Regardless of their result on Sunday, Chelsea’s impressive work in the transfer market will have some supporters wondering who the next new player to arrive at Stamford Bridge will be.
Tagliafico poised for Ajax contract extension
Nicolas Tagliafico was one of the top European-based left-backs linked with Chelsea over the summer, only for the Blues to ultimately complete a deal for long-time target Ben Chilwell.
The Ajax defender could still find his way to English football, but it appears he won’t be on the move in January. According to De Telegraaf (via the Mail ), Tagliafico is set to sign a new deal keeping him at the Dutch club until 2023.
The Dutch publication reports the Argentina international has agreed to the extension in principle, but there is a suggestion that player and club have an unwritten agreement that he would still be able to move at the end of the season to play in a “top competition”.
Alaba could be about to open talks with Chelsea in January
Bayern Munich’s Austrian international David Alaba is out of contract next summer, and will be free to open talks with clubs over potential pre-contract agreements in the new year.
The versatile 28-year-old has been with Bayern since he was a teenager, but talks over a contract extension have reportedly stalled.
This is good news for Chelsea, who – according to SportBild’s Christian Falk (via Sport Witness ) – could be about to open negotiations with representatives of the Champions League winner.
Falk claims agent Pini Zahavi is working on setting up discussions between Chelsea and Alaba, with a move to Stamford Bridge very much on the table.
Atletico Madrid defender is ‘key target’ for Chelsea
Chelsea secured one of their main central defensive targets over the summer with the capture of Thiago Silva, but the Blues remain keen on adding a younger centre-back to help them move forward in the longer term.
According to Fabrizio Romano, speaking on his Here We Go podcast (via the Sun ), that man is Atletico Madrid’s Jose Maria Gimenez.
The Uruguayan has been linked with the Blues on and off over recent years, having become a key cog in Diego Simeone’s Atleti squad.
Gimenez, 25, was part of the team which beat Barcelona 1-0 in their last La Liga game, with Simeone’s team conceding just twice in the five games he has played this season.
