Better news for the European champions is Romelu Lukaku’s availability after being sent home early by Belgium with muscle fatigue. The £97.5million striker took part in training back at Cobham and gets the nod today.
But Chelsea’s attacking options have been limited by the absence of Hakim Ziyech, who has not been able to take part in their last two training sessions due to a headache, and Christian Pulisic, who is still to recover from an ankle injury. Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Timo Werner are in the XI again as a result.
Rudiger did not play in Germany’s win against North Macedonia on Monday because of a back complaint that forced him to miss training. Upon his return to Chelsea it has been determined that he needs further rest before being thrown into the action.
Tuchel was already aware that Thiago would not be available.
He said: “So we had our talk today about Brentford, we had our tactical training today, and he missed all that.
“We knew before when he would come back and when he would travel, so it’s nothing new.
“I’ve got used to a lot of things in national breaks, this is how it is nowadays.
“Are we happy about it, all the coaches with the amount of games our players play for their countries? No, we are not. Does anybody ask us if we want to change anything? Also, not. So it’s nothing new.”
