Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been labelled as the Premier League’s worst summer signing by BT Sport pundit Chris Sutton.
The Gabonese striker opted to snub a move away in favour of committing his future to Arsenal on a new three-year deal.
But since then Arsenal’s captain has struggled to produce his best form, with his latest showing against Aston Villa of particular concern.
Aubameyang failed to muster a single shot on goal during the 3-0 defeat – the first time he has done so in a home league fixture in his Arsenal career.
Asked to take his pick of the worst acquisitions this summer, Sutton told The Mail : “The worst? We were all told that Arsenal tying down Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang would be like a new signing and, after a lot of hullabaloo, he put pen to paper.
“Since then, he’s scored once from the spot.
“If fans were at stadiums, he wouldn’t exactly have had them on the edge of their seats.”
Aubameyang has only netted three times in all competitions this campaign, compared to the eight goals he had at the same stage last season.
Much of Arsenal’s problems have arguably stemmed from a lack of creativity, though, rather than Aubameyang’s form alone.
Former Arsenal defender Lee Dixon has defended the striker and feels his teammates should be helping to dig their captain out of a hole.

Dixon told talkSPORT : “If you’re not getting the service or the opportunities to score and the weight of the goals is all on your shoulders – some players relish it.
“You’ve got to keep him bubbling away, give him everything he needs to perform. That means chances on the pitch, getting the balls into channels where he makes the runs.
“At the moment there is so much pressure on him because nobody else in the team scores goals really. And that’s a big weight to carry.”
