Club World Cup 2021: Chelsea fixtures, schedule, how to watch

The 2021 Club World Cup has been pushed back to 2022 due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the host nation has been changed from Japan to the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Liverpool (2019) and Manchester United (2008) are the only previous English winners, with Chelsea losing to Corinthians in the 2012 final.

Here is all you need to know about the competition:

When is the 2021 Club World Cup?

FIFA has confirmed that the Club World Cup will run from February 3 to February 12, 2022.

The competition was originally scheduled to take place in 2021 between December 9 and December 19, but was pushed back.

Who are the teams taking part?

The Club World Cup features the champions of the six different FIFA confederations, while one club qualifies to represent the host nation.

The host team is Al Jazira, who are reigning UAE Pro League champions.

They are joined by Auckland City from New Zealand, who have been nominated as the Oceania representative after the 2021 OFC Champions League was cancelled due to the pandemic.

Mexican club Monterrey have qualified after winning the 2021 CONCACAF Champions League, and Al Hilal from Saudi Arabia are the AFC Champions League winners representing Asia.

Egypt’s Al Ahly won the most recent edition of the CAF Champions League in Africa.

Chelsea represent Europe after winning the Champions League, while Brazilian giants Palmeiras were the last team to qualify after winning the Copa Libertadores.

How does the tournament work?

Al Jazira face Auckland City in the only first-round fixture.

There are then two second-round matches, two semi-finals and a final.

Who will Chelsea face in the Club World Cup?

Chelsea will enter at the semi-final stage and face Al Hilal, Al Jazira or Auckland City for a place in the final.

In the first round, Al Jazira face Auckland City. The winner of that match will face Al Hilal, with the winners then taking on Chelsea.

In the other half of the draw, Palmeiras play either Monterrey or Al Ahly in their semi-final.

When are Chelsea in action at the Club World Cup?

Chelsea’s semi-final has been confirmed for February 9 and, should they get there, the final takes place on February 12.

Both matches will be played at the Mohammed bin Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.

How can I watch the Club World Cup?

Broadcasting details are yet to be confirmed but the BBC showed the 2020 edition, which was won by Bayern Munich, and are expected to do so again.
