Conte excited by Tottenham summer signings as pre-season tour begins

ntonio Conte says it was important for Tottenham to do their business early this summer as the squad began their pre-season tour of South Korea.

Four of Spurs’ five summer signings – Fraser Forster, Ivan Perisic, Yves Bissouma and Richarlison – were part of the squad for Monday morning’s open training session at Seoul World Cup Stadium in front of around 6,000 fans, while Clement Lenglet has remained in London because he signed too late to get a visa.

“It was important to sign new players early,” Conte said. “In this way you can prepare, you can work at the start with these players, bring [them] into our idea of football. Compared to the past, now for me it’s a bit easier because the team knows very well what I want. After seven months of work, we have a base.”

Croatian legend Persisic joined a free transfer from Conte’s former club Inter Milan, where the pair won the Scudetto together.

“We’re talking about a really good player, strong physically, good quality with both feet,” said Conte in an interview with SpursTV in Seoul. “He can give us a lot.

“[Bissouma] impressed us in these two games [against Brighton], he played very well. But the whole season he played really well. He’s another important player we’re adding to midfield.

“We know very well [Richarlison’s] talent. We’re talking about a striker that can play in every three positions in front. I like him. He’s strong mentally. It’s not easy to play against him because during the game he’s always very strong. We need this type of player with great character. Strong physically but at the same time with good quality.”

England international Forster, 34, will deputise for club captain Hugo Lloris between the sticks next season and Conte says he has the perfect character to be an understudy.

“Fraser, I knew him. I played in Champions League [against] Celtic with Juventus and I was impressed,” the Italian said. “We’re talking about a really good ‘keeper. He’s a really good guy. I’ve seen this week he came in really well into the dressing room. Because for the second goalkeeper it’s a particular role and you need to have a very positive second ‘keeper all the season. We made the best choice for us.”

Lenglet joined Spurs on Friday on a season-long loan deal from Barcelona, where he was deemed surplus to requirements following the arrival of Chelsea’s Andreas Christensen.

“In the last two years, he played, [then] he didn’t play with Barcelona,” Conte said of the France international. “He didn’t play with the right continuity but for sure he can give us a lot of experience and personality. He’s good quality and then also I think with the three defenders he can give us more than [if we played] with four at the back.”
