Nuno Espirito Santo reviews Spurs’ defeat against Manchester United

Antonio Conte has already given his verdict on Tottenham star Harry Kane, as speculation rumbles on regarding Spurs making another attempt to lure the Italian to London.

Nuno Espirito Santo is reportedly on the brink of losing his job after just a few months following Saturday’s miserable 3-0 defeat to Manchester United.

And that has seen Spurs revive their interest in Conte, according to reports. However, The Mirror understands that he is likely to face significant competition from Paulo Fonseca – another candidate who was in the frame for the job back in the summer.

Nuno’s short spell in charge has unravelled spectacularly after a near-perfect start, with Tottenham topping the Premier League table after the Portuguese boss won his first three games in charge.

But Spurs have looked miles off the pace ever since – with Nuno now set to pay the ultimate price for failing to get the most out of his underperforming players.

If Nuno is axed, then Conte’s previous comments on Harry Kane could certainly help win around any fans with reservations over a second attempt to appoint the volatile ex-Chelsea boss.

“Many praise Harry Kane for his ability to go get the ball and play with the team, such as with the equaliser against Denmark,” said Conte during his work as a pundit during Euro 2020.

“Of course, he’s good at that too, but it’s in the box where he’s clinical and as a coach, I would always keep him in there because he’s devastating.”

Conte’s verdict on Kane will be music to the ears of Spurs fans who have seen their star man look alarmingly off the pace under Nuno.

Despite insisting he remains happy to be at the club, Kane has looked a shadow of the player that Manchester City were prepared to pay in excess of £100million for this summer.

It’s been reported that part of Nuno’s appeal to Daniel Levy and the Spurs hierarchy was his insistence that his style of play would help get the most out of Kane and Son Heung-Min. And whilst the latter has convinced, that’s been far from the case for Kane.

But Conte’s analysis hints that he’d make it his mission to keep the England captain in and around the box – something that he’s failed to do consistently so far this season.

Conte has made no secret of his desire to work with the Spurs striker in the past.

During his spell at Chelsea, Conte lavished praise on Kane – admitting that he’d “love” to sign the striker if he was afforded the opportunity to do so.

“For me, Kane, now is one of the best strikers in the world,” Conte said back in 2017.

“If I had to buy one striker I would go to Kane. He is a complete striker.”

If Levy can persuade Conte to gamble on taking the Spurs job, then he may finally get his wish to work with Kane.

But the size of the job that would await him wouldn’t be lost on Conte, and it’s hard to see him being convinced if Levy couldn’t manage to do so in the summer, with the club arguably in a worse position now.

If he can’t, then it’s not out of the question that Nuno is handed a temporary reprieve in the Spurs dugout.

But with Fonseca’s name also re-emerging, things are looking increasingly bleak for the former Wolves chief.
