Ralf Rangnick previews Aston Villa clash

Given the recent leaks about dissatisfaction behind the scenes at Manchester United, the focus on the players has been ramped up even more.

Interim manager Ralf Rangnick has a challenging job on his hands to steer the club’s talented but unbalanced squad through some choppy waters.

On Saturday, he will face arguably the trickiest test of his tenure so far away at Aston Villa.

After United knocked Villa out of the FA Cup on Monday in a fiery encounter, a lively atmosphere is expected in the Midlands on Saturday night.

How they stand up to that will say a lot about the Red Devils players.

Ahead of that fixture, here are the latest talking points from around Old Trafford.

Ronaldo is said to have missed part of United’s training session

Rangnick considered ‘outdated’

Mirror Sport understands that Rangnick is not popular in the United dressing room, with some viewing the German as “outdated and out of his time.”

The source in question also suggested “he is so unpopular, we don’t like him.”

Rangnick’s appointment was initially considered to be a step forward for United, as Rangnick’s pressing football blueprint has influenced some of the great modern-day managers.

However, the team has struggled for consistency under his tutelage, as they’ve been unable to showcase the energy needed to make the high-intensity brand of football work.

Ronaldo leaves training early

Cristiano Ronaldo would appear to be a doubt for United’s trip to Villa Park, as he was pictured leaving training early.

The veteran forward is said to have ended the session due to some discomfort in his thigh. After being assessed by the club’s medical staff he returned home instead of taking part in the session again.

Ronaldo missed the clash with Villa in the FA Cup on Monday and in recent weeks he has struggled to show his best form under Rangnick.

If the striker is absent, it’s likely two of Edinson Cavani, Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood will lead the line in the German’s 4-2-2-2 setup.

Rangnick praises Van de Beek approach

The United boss has praised the professionalism of Donny van de Beek amid increased speculation the Dutchman could be on the move.

It’s been reported that United offered Van de Beek to both Newcastle United and Borussia Dortmund on loan, as the former Ajax man remains on the fringes of the first-team squad with the Red Devils.

While some players would potentially pose an issue if they were constantly left out, Rangnick said Van de Beek has been a positive influence around the place.

“He’s always performing at a high level in training,” he said. “With the World Cup coming up in the winter, he wants to play for his country. I can understand his wish and desire to play. On the other hand, we have a lot of competition in our squad exactly in those positions.”
