Time waits for no football team, and even though Liverpool are still looking pretty strong right now there are always those with their eyes on the future.

The Reds’ famed front three of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino may have all shared five goals between them in Porto on Tuesday night, but with all three turning 30 in the next nine months then the task of what to do to replace them has been at the forefront of many Liverpool supporters’ minds for a while now.

And with that thought in focus, plenty of those will have sat in front of their televisions to watch the Champions League action at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

Not to watch their rivals Manchester United of course, but to keep an eye on Villarreal’s Arnaut Danjuma.

The 24-year-old wide man – a Dutch international teammate of Virgil van Dijk – was linked with the Reds in the summer before he swapped Championship club Bournemouth for life in La Liga, but Liverpool are still said to be keeping close tabs on him.

Reds scouts are believed to have been in attendance at Old Trafford on Wednesday to watch Danjuma, who as a right-footed player who operates on the left has been suggested as a possible replacement for Mane in the future.

Those scouts are sure to have been impressed with what they saw, as Danjuma was at the forefront of Villarreal’s early efforts to pin United back.

Although very right-footed and therefore always looking to cut inside from the left, Danjuma showed a willingness to take on a bewildered Diogo Dalot both on the inside and outside in the early stages. If it was a tactic to dizzy the Portuguese, it worked.

Danjuma’s express pace was really worrying the United defender, and he fired into the side-netting after one burst past him before almost finding Paco Alcacer with a cross after another.

Watching on in the BT Sport studio, former United players Michael Owen and Owen Hargreaves were hugely impressed.

“Dalot has had a bit of nightmare, not sure how he’s going to work this one out,” said Owen. “Danjuma has been electrifying in parts. It’s just wave after wave.”

Hargreaves added: “Danjuma has been fantastic, Mason Greenwood has to help Dalot.

“Danjuma one on one, he’s near enough unplayable and got the better of Dalot in these situations.

“There’s a reason why this Villarreal side went to Real Madrid and probably should’ve won [a 0-0 draw in La Liga last weekend], they should be ahead in this game and Danjuma has been the biggest threat.

“Every time he touches it he looks like he’s going to make something happen.”

Then that something did happen.

Danjuma would be a good addition to any side

A strong Villarreal start to the second half saw them attack with purpose, and Danjuma was found by Manuel Tigueros as he again raided in from the left.

His cross with the outside of his right foot was perfect, and there was Paco Alcacer to slide in for the opener.

It was a fine goal, and one Villarreal deserved.

They were soon pegged back by Alex Telles’ stunner as United grew into the game and Danjuma’s influence faded long before Cristiano Ronaldo’s stoppage time winner, but he certainly showed enough to suggest he could be a useful addition to whomever wants him.
