Darren Fletcher has identified “world-class” No.9 to replace Anthony Martial

Manchester united forward Anthony Martial is facing a spell on the sidelines after suffering an injury scare on international duty, but the club’s technical director could well have the ideal replacement already.

Martial limped off during France’s 2-0 win over Kazakhstan on Sunday after setting up Ousmane Dembele’s goal.

The striker appeared to get his studs caught in the grass and twist his knee.

Martial attempted to carry on, but he was clearly bothered by the injury and had to be taken off moments later.

With United having a crucial few months ahead of them as they attempt to end the season with a trophy, Fletcher could have to turn to a player he dubbed “a defender’s nightmare” – Mason Greenwood.

The young striker has been out of sorts so far this season having played predominantly out wide.

Greenwood, who is a lethal finisher with the ability to kick with either foot, can play on either wing or through the middle.

But it seems that he could well be used as a central striker in Martial’s absence, especially given Fletcher’s previous comments on his ability.

In the past, Fletcher has heaped praise on the youngster and claimed he thinks Greenwood is the club’s best striker.

“I think he’s a starter in United’s best team,” he said late last year.

“Mason plays off the right-hand side, Anthony Martial in the middle and Marcus Rashford on the left, with Bruno [Fernandes] at No.10.

“That’s the best attack and the one that put people on the edge of their seats after lockdown and produced United’s best form.

“I’m sure Mason’s evolution is to be a No.9. He’s got world-class potential.

“The fact he can go both ways – not many strikers can go naturally onto their left foot and naturally onto their right foot and finish it.

“He’s a defender’s nightmare.”
