Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reviews Manchester City defeat

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea says he is “hurt” in blunt response to losing the Manchester Derby to rivals City.

The Red Devils were beaten 2-0 at Old Trafford on Saturday, with Pep Guardiola ‘s men barely needing to get out of second gear throughout the 90 minutes.

De Gea put in an admirable performance by producing a slew of good saves but the Spaniard looked suspect for Bernardo Silva ‘s strike on the stroke of half-time which killed the contest.

Heading into the break, de Gea was seen hitting the inside of the Old Trafford tunnel in a furious reaction, and after the match, the 31-year-old posted on social media: “I am hurt.”

It appears Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is on the same line of thinking as his goalkeeper, stating that United must return to action following the international break – when they take on strugglers Watford – like a “hurt animal.”

“Players are human beings and when you lose a game of football there is no better remedy than winning a game and getting your confidence by winning a game,” Solskjaer said in his post-match press conference.

“Hopefully the ones who go away do that and for us it is all about Watford.

“We have to come out against Watford like a proper hurt animal and get back to what we know we can be and that is the only way to approach this and attack this situation.”

“Yes the short answer is it [the break] has come at a good time for us.”

The Red Devils are already six points behind their bitter rivals in third and nine behind Premier League leaders Chelsea, with the latter to play away from home later this month.

Solskjaer has guided his team to just three wins in their last eight games and the under-fire United boss wants his side to get back to the form they showed in the second half of last season, having taken a “big step backwards” since.

“It is about getting back to what we were starting to look like,” Solskjaer affirmed.

“We started to look like a proper team, on the front foot and a team that I liked.

“The Tottenham result [a 3-0 win] was good but this was a big step back.”

He added: “I’m sure when we come back, the players will be fresh in their minds after the internationals and, of course, the demands on me and the players are going to be high, expectations and we’ve just got to get back to what, as I said, we started to look like and what we were for a while and we’ve got the players to do that.”
