De Gea’s Man Utd U-turn after keeper left “distraught” over Henderson decision

David de Gea was less than pleased at Manchester United last season while the club turned down a move for Dean Henderson this summer.

It comes as the two keepers battle it out for the main spot at Old Trafford with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer still puzzled.

The Spaniard was given the No. 1 jersey throughout the early stages of the season but some calamitous errors changed the Red Devils coach’s mind.

It saw Henderson come in for the 30-year-old, who is the best-paid goalie in the world on £375,000-a-week.

De Gea was still given matches in Europe, however, but his last appearance against Villarreal in the Europa League final saw more questions arise than answers.

David De Gea failed to score his penalty, resulting in Villarreal lifting the trophy

According to The Athletic, the former Atletico Madrid star was left distraught after the match – that went to penalties.

It was De Gea’s missed spot-kick that saw United miss out on the trophy and hand victory to Unai Emery’s La Liga side.

The report states that the keeper gave the impression that he was prepared to walk out on the club then and there and was left inconsolable by the result.

However, the Spain international later met up with Solskajer to reiterate his desire to stay with the Red Devils in an apparent U-turn over his intentions.

It is also reported that De Gea was keen to stamp his authority on his position in the squad as he looks to win back his first-team spot.

Henderson’s own future is also up in the air and a loan bid from Wolves was rejected outright, reports The Athletic.

That came early in the summer when the Molineux side knew that they would be losing Rui Patricio to AS Roma.

Instead, they have snapped up Jose Sa from Olympiacos while Henderson remains a key figure at United.

Old Trafford officials see the England international as the future of the club between the posts after coming up through the academy.

Henderson has always maintained that he wants to fight for his spot at United, the club he loves.

But he has also told the Red Devils that he will walk out unless he is not given the first-team football that he feels he deserves.

It leaves Solskjaer in a tough position with both goalies brewing a rivalry but it remains to be seen whether either will leave – even if they are disgruntled.
