Rice has been linked with a move to Manchester United to fill their defensive midfield hole and the West Ham star has been likened to two Red Devils greats by a man who played for both clubs
The Red Devils have been linked with a big-money transfer for Rice but West Ham will not part easily with the 22-year-old.
Keane won seven Premier League titles with the north west club and Carrick is now a first-team coach at United, assisting Ole Gunnar Solskjaer following a trophy-laden career of his own.
Since the latter hung up his boots, the Red Devils have struggled to replace his presence in the centre of the park and failed to bring in a defensive midfielder during the summer window.
But Sheringham, having played for both clubs, believes Rice would be the ideal fit for Solskjaer to fix his midfield issue and would “easily” fit in at United, who face West Ham on Sunday.

“He’s a player I see at a club like Manchester United without a doubt,” the former Red Devils and Irons striker said while appearing at Maurice Newman’s annual charity Golf Day in aid of Great Ormond Street Hospital at Stapleford Abbotts Golf Course, Romford.
“I thought Declan Rice was our outstanding player at Euro 2020. I was very disappointed when he got brought off [by Gareth Southgate] in the final, it was the wrong decision.
“We couldn’t retain possession when it was tough against the Italians – and he was one player who did retain possession,” Sheringham explained.

“He moved like a Rolls-Royce with the ball out of a problem and then found a pass after that. It’s invaluable to be able to do that and he showed what a top player he is.
“He’s a top player so he will be going somewhere quite soon. He’ll definitely be on Manchester United’s radar.
“He’s in the mould of Roy Keane and Michael Carrick, who were two top, top players, which you’ve got to have in midfield for Manchester United,” he added. “So he’d easily fit in there.”
The ex-top-flight marksman, who won seven trophies at United, also discussed the pressure on Solskjaer to deliver silverware to Old Trafford this season and says he is “convinced” it will come.
“Ole has to win a trophy this season, without a shadow of a doubt,” Sheringham stated. “It’s no good being nearly or close and all that.
“The pressure is on him this year and he understands that, he knows what it’s all about to stay in a job at the top level. You’ve got to win things.
“I’m quite convinced they will win something. United are getting better. When you look at a football club, you look to see if there’s any progression.
He continued: “They’ve had a down period since Sir Alex left, it’s been troubled. But if you look at where they’ve finished [under Ole], they’re getting in finals and getting close, it looks better.
“Now is the time to win things, though. It makes it tough for him.”
