Former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov believes the club may try to cut their losses on midfielder Donny van de Beek.

The central midfielder was handed a rare start for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side in Tuesday evening’s Champions League opener at Young Boys but was hauled off at half time.

The Dutchman had been making his first start of the campaign for United but a first half red card for defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka changed the complexion of the game.

The visitors were forced to change shape following the right-back’s dismissal with Raphael Varane replace van de Beek at the break as United went to three at the back.

Donny van de Beek started for United against Young Boys but did not last very long

It was another difficult evening for the former Ajax midfielder, who had been an unused substitute for the opening three Premier League games of the campaign before a five-minute cameo appearance in the win at home to Newcastle on Saturday.

It follows on from a frustrating debut campaign for the 24-year-old at Old Trafford, as he made just four Premier League starts last season.

Berbatov explained on Betfair : “United midfielder Donny van de Beek is running out of time to save his United career. He started against Young Boys but was substituted at half-time.

“This has been the story of his time at the club. If he plays, he’s brought off. If he comes on, he gets 10 minutes. He never gets the chance to settle and show what he can do.

“It’s just not working out for Van de Beek. It’s a pity because United paid big money for him. But this is what happens when you spend money just to satisfy your fans.

“I still hope he gets a proper chance but it is going to be very difficult for him and the club may decide to cut their losses, if they can.”

Van de Beek made 36 appearances for the Red Devils across all competitions last season but only 15 of those were from the start and he was consistently overlooked for the side’s biggest games.

Fred and Scott McTominay were the preferred central midfield partnership deployed by Solskjaer with Nemanja Matic also enjoying greater prominence within the first-team squad.

Van de Beek is more of a forward-thinking midfielder but found his opportunities limited due to the prominence of Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba in the starting line-ups.

The Dutchman has endured a frustrating year on the international scene too as an injury ruled him out of this summer’s European Championships, while he was left out of the first squad of new boss Louis van Gaal.
