Former US President Donald Trump has shared a message of support for “true champion” golfer Tiger Woods following his serious car crash.
The sporting legend sustained possible career-ending “leg injuries” after he was cut free from his SUV by firefighters.
It happened in Ranchos Palos Verdes, California, with shocking pictures showing the wreckage of Woods’ car.
He is reportedly undergoing surgery for serious injuries.
As news of the crash spread, golf fanatic Trump wrote in a statement: “Get well soon, Tiger. You are a true champion.”
In 2019 Trump awarded Woods the Presidential Medal of Freedom – the nation’s highest civilian honour.
Woods’ agent Mark Steinberg said: “Tiger Woods was in a single-car accident this morning in California where he suffered multiple leg injuries.
“He is currently in surgery and we thank you for your privacy and support.”
Celebrities from all fields have been sharing messages of support.
Jada Pinkett Smith wrote: “Prayers up for the GOAT @TigerWoods who was in an accident this morning.
“Was just with him yesterday. Don’t take not even a MOMENT for granted! I know you’re good because your Tiger within is a beast!!!”
Singer Cher wrote: “Saying prayers For Tiger Woods.”
OJ Simpson posted a video on Twitter saying that Woods “didn’t look good” during interviews at the weekend.
He said: “I just assumed he was on some medication, I don’t know what that has to do with this.
“After this last surgery I’m a little surprised the people around him, his manager and people close to him would even have him driving.
“Especially if he was on pain medication, they should have had a driver for him.”
“You will never count this man out, in any event prayers are with you Tiger.”
Civil rights icon Rev Jesse Jackson wrote: ” @TigerWoods, one of the greatest golfers ever. With excellence he knocked down walls and built bridges. Tiger made the sport more universal. Praying for you Tiger, your family and for a full recovery.”
Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department described the accident as a “single vehicle roll-over traffic collision” in Ranchos Palos Verdes, California.
According to the department’s Twitter account, the vehicle sustained “major damage” in the crash on Tuesday morning.
A Sheriff’s spokesperson said: “On February 23, 2021, at approximately 7.12 AM, LASD responded to a single vehicle roll-over traffic collision on the border of Rolling Hills Estates and Rancho Palos Verdes.
“The vehicle was travelling northbound on Hawthorne Boulevard, at Blackhorse Road, when it crashed. The vehicle sustained major damage.”
“The driver and sole occupant was identified as PGA golfer, Eldrick ‘Tiger’ Woods,” officials confirmed.
