Dustin Poirier ready to grant Conor McGregor the chance to avenge defeat

Dustin Poirier is ready to fight Conor McGregor for a third time.

The American needed less than two rounds to stop his rival in their rematch last month as he avenged his KO defeat seven years earlier.

McGregor immediately demanded an immediate trilogy bout – and wants the lightweight title to be on the line in May.

The 155lb belt is still held by Khabib Nurmagomedov but the Dagestani is expected to give it up shortly, leaving Poirier in pole position to fight for the vacant strap.

And he has indicated he is willing to face McGregor for the prize, tweeting: “You know we are going to do it a third time.”

Poirier won his second fight with McGregor via second-round TKO

Poirier’s message comes after McGregor analysed his defeat with a lengthy post on Instagram.

The Irishman admitted he had been training with Manny Pacquiao in mind – and underestimated Poirier.

He said: “I enjoyed racking up some more time inside the famed UFC Octagon.

“Forty seconds in three years is all I’d had up to this bout. I was savouring every second and enjoying my work [but I was a] little single disciplined in my approach and stance with mostly boxing.

“It’s what I get for picking this bout and opponent as a precursor to a boxing match against Pacman. I deserved to get the legs kicked off me going in with this thinking.

“This is not the game to play around with. Besides this though my shots were sharp and I was in full control. Albeit the leg attacks were building up on me throughout the course.”

Turning his attention to a third bout with Poirier, he added: “One a piece now with a trilogy bout for all the marbles! Wow! Exciting!

“Not a trilogy I was expecting, nor the tactical affair I was anticipating, but I’d be lying if I said this wasn’t meant to be. This is exactly how this was always meant to be! Buzzing!”
