Edinson Cavani shows age just a number as Man Utd get their revenge on Tottenham

Edinson Cavani has enjoyed a glittering career famous for his all action style and non-stop work rate.

But even at 34 years old and after winning so many trophies and personal accolades, this game will surely stand out even among many, many highlights.

A spectacular diving header for the winner, an incredible goal line clearance to stop a certain equaliser and a huge VAR controversy just for good measure.

Eventually, it felt like justice was done because Cavani and Manchester United were surely deprived of a perfectly good goal and, as is always the way, it was the villain of the piece Heung-Min Son who put Tottenham ahead.

But the visitors dug deep, Cavani refused to give up and, after a thrilling turnaround, United left White Hart Lane with a result which went some small way to exacting a little for revenge for Tottenham’s 6-1 win at Old Trafford back in October.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer described that as his “worst day as United manager” and yet, here, his players showed true grit, fighting spirit and determination to claw back a result from adversity.

When Mason Greenwood got a third, the injury time clincher in the 96th minute, United staff up in the scouts’ seats, the visiting bench erupted in celebration.

It clearly meant a huge deal for Solskjaer who left punching the air in the direction of the directors’ box.

This was clearly one over Jose Mourinho, his predecessor at Old Trafford, the United boss who won trophies and has since ridiculed Solskjaer for suggesting they are not the be all and end all.

Now, after yet another setback, the top four looks unlikely for Tottenham, Mourinho’s constant jibes at his players may be undermining his chances of finishing the season strongly with the Carabao Cup final still on the horizon.

Mourinho has to ask the same players he has been criticising for big performances – and this was yet more proof that they may be losing faith. They were outfought as well as being outwitted.

And that was all after Spurs went ahead with United still cursing VAR and the latest video blunder which feels like it is just killing football.

Scott McTominay drove forward from midfield, his flailing arm just caught Son in the face with maybe the slightest brush of a finger nail and the Spurs forward went down like he had been shot.

United kept going forward, Fred and Paul Pogba combined to set up Cavani to put the ball in the net after 32 minutes… and then the VAR video review kicked in. What is hard to believe is that not one but two referees thought it was a foul. What has become of football?

VAR Craig Pawson told referee Chris Kavanagh to check his pitch side monitor. The goal was ruled out and United were rightly outraged. It was a shocking decision.

Football law obviously dictates that Son, who miraculously got up and played on, was then at the centre of the action just to compound matters. Harry Kane found Lucas Moura, his low cross put the ball on a plate for Son at the back post to score the 40th minute opener.

In fairness, the sense of injustice fired up United. They were fuming but channelled their anger to good effect. Fred swapped passes with Marcus Rashford, Cavani saw his shot brilliantly saved by Hugo Lloris and then Fred scored from the rebound after 57 minutes.

United went ahead after 79 minutes as Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Bruno Fernandes helped set up substitute Greenwood to put over a low cross and Cavani scored with a diving header that club legend Mark Hughes would have been proud of.

Incredibly, Cavani then pulled off another magic trick. A header off the line, against his own post to deny Moussa Sissoko a certain goal with the Spurs substitute lurking behind him.

Then late on, Greenwood got the third goal with a terrific low shot past Lloris to complete United’s impressive away win.
