The Brazil international only joined Barcelona outright this summer but his contract contained a mega-clause while Spurs had to beat off competition from their North London rivals
The Gunners had identified the Brazil international as a replacement for the outgoing Hector Bellerin – who is set to join Real Betis on a season-long loan deal on transfer deadline day.
Ironically the move of Bellerin is to de facto replace Emerson at the Seville-based club as summer signing Youssouf Sabaly sustained an injury in pre-season.
Emerson excelled at Betis since arriving in Spanish football in January 2019, when he had a somewhat convoluted co-ownership arrangement between Betis and Barca – who bought his contract outright this summer.
Barcelona’s well documented financial problems meant that they were always open to cashing-in on the full-back this year with both Spurs and Arsenal among the club’s interested in his signature.
Barca president Joan Laporta said upon Emerson’s return to the club this summer: “His release clause is €300million and we hope he can stay here for many years.”
Spurs completed the signing of Emerson on transfer deadline day for an initial fee of £25.7million and he is now likely to be their first-choice right-back this campaign.
Japhet Tanganga has been playing in the position in the opening weeks of the campaign for Nuno Espirito Santo’s team, with both Serge Aurier and Matt Doherty out of favour at the North London club.
The futures of Aurier and Doherty have now been thrown into doubt following the deal for the Brazil international.

Emerson made 79 appearances in all competitions for Betis, scoring five goals and providing 10 assists.
He played more minutes than any other Betis player last season as Manuel Pellegrini’s side finished sixth in La Liga to qualify for the Europa League.
Emerson has represented Brazil at Under-20 and Under-23 level before winning his first senior cap in November 2019.
Arsenal, for their part, are poised to land Takehiro Tomiyasu from Bologna – the Japanese international who had previously been linked to Leicester and Tottenham.
