Manager Mikel Arteta is hopeful that the two results can kickstart Arsenal’s season, which saw them go on a run of seven league games without a win before the Chelsea fixture.
One of the reasons behind their poor form was a lack of goals, with experienced players like Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Willian failing to deliver.
As a result, Arteta has given opportunities to some of Arsenal’s talented young players, with Gabriel Martinelli, Emile Smith Rowe and Bukayo Saka starting in both wins and impressing.
Between them, they were directly involved in three of the four goals Arsenal scored and they look set to continue being given opportunities to impress.
While Saka and Martinelli burst onto the scene last season, Smith Rowe has had to wait for his chance, spending most of the previous campaign loan in the Championship with Huddersfield.
The 20-year-old had made just one start in all competitions this season before being thrust into the starting line-up against Chelsea and he has taken his opportunity.
“I’ve really enjoyed it,” Smith Rowe told the club’s official website. “It’s a dream for me to play for this club. I’m so happy and grateful that the manager’s shown faith in me and given me the chance.
“I’ve just got to keep training hard, and then when I get the opportunity I’ve got to take it.”
The youngster was signed by Arsenal as a ten-year-old and impressed as he progressed through the age groups, attracting interest in his services from elsewhere.
The likes of Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, PSV Eindhoven and Barcelona were interested in him but, despite the obvious lure of the Catalan giants, Smith Rowe had no intention of leaving Arsenal and his commitment is paying dividends.
Speaking to Sky Sports back in 2018, he declared that “Arsenal is the right club for me”, saying: “I used to watch that Barcelona team, Xavi, Iniesta, Messi, when they were in their prime.
“So when I found out that they were interested of course I was very happy, but I can’t explain to you how much I feel that Arsenal is the right club for me.”
Now that he has been given his opportunity, Smith Rowe will be hoping that he can continue to deliver in Arsenal’s upcoming league games.
