England 3-0 Ireland: International friendly – as it happened

Gareth Southgate’s men returned to winning ways with a comfortable win over Republic of Ireland at Wembley on Thursday night.

Harry Maguire’s header opened the scoring and the Three Lions never looked back, with Jadon Sancho’s smart finish doubling the lead before half time.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin converted from the penalty spot after the impressive Bukayo Saka had been brought down before a raft of substitutions saw England ease off the gas.

Among the replacements was 17-year-old Jude Bellingham, who became the third youngest player ever to make his England debut after Theo Walcott and Wayne Rooney.

Elsewhere in Europe, there was agony for Northern Ireland and ecstasy for Scotland in their European Championship qualifying playoffs.

Northern Ireland were beaten 2-1 a.e.t. in Belfast by Slovakia but Scotland reached next summer’s tournament – where they will be in the same group as England – thanks to a penalty shootout win over Serbia.

Follow along with action from Wembley below, plus updates on Scotland and Northern Ireland…

Scotland are going to the Euros!

Incredible! Fulham’s Aleksandar Mitrovic misses the final spot-kick of the shootout, brilliantly saved by Marshall, and Scotland have won it 5-4.

A first major tournament since 1998!

Northern Ireland out

It’s all over in Belfast – Northern Ireland will not be at the Euros. They’ve been beaten 2-1 after extra time by Slovakia.

The final whistle has just gone in Belgrade. Scotland and Serbia will contest a penalty shootout to see who joins England’s group at next summer’s European Championships.

Northern Ireland still have a few minutes to find a leveller in Belfast.

Northern Ireland behind

It could be heartbreak for Northern Ireland! Michal Duris has squeezed one in at the near post to give Slovakia the lead and the hosts must once again try to find a leveller. They’ve got eight minutes to do so…

Jack Grealish has been speaking to ITV…

“Coming here and training with these guys for two weeks steps up everything about your game. Watching the way Harry [Kane], Jordan Henderson, Raheem Sterling are day to day, how they train, you can learn things from them.

“I want to play as much as possible. I’ve got to try and impress the manager as much as I can. Since I came here he’s been brilliant with me, on and off the pitch. ”

Both Scotland and Northern Ireland are midway through their periods of extra-time with no further goals and are heading for penalties unless something changes.

We’ll keep you updated with what happens there, alongside all the reaction from Wembley.

FULL-TIME | England 3-0 Ireland |

90+1 mins: Just a couple of minutes to be added…

88 mins: I don’t think there’s been a corner where Harry Maguire hasn’t won a header. Reece James’ latest outswinger finds its way to his head but he can’t direct it on target.

85 mins: England have lost a bit of their zest after all those changes but it’s been a good night’s work for Gareth Southgate’s men. Dean Henderson will want this clean sheet on debut held onto.
