England player ratings: Root and Anderson star in Sri Lanka series win

ngland will travel to India for a tricky Test series off the back of an impressive showing on the subcontinent in Sri Lanka.

Here’s how cricket correspondent Will Macpherson rated those on show in the two-Test series…

Always looked a bit better technically than Sibley, but never made it through Lasith Embuldeniya’s first spell. A learning experience, including at short leg.

Redeemed by his calm performance in the face of adversity in the second Test chase. Looked shaky, rode his luck, but made it home. Such mental strength isn’t to be sniffed at, and is probably enough to keep his place.

Played better than his stats might suggest, always got a start, and was involved in three vital partnerships (with Root in both first innings, and Lawrence in the first Test chase).

426 runs at 106.5; 2 wickets at 9.5

An epic performance. Was brilliant in both first innings, and only seemed capable of getting out in freakish manners. His bowling was handy too, and caught well at first slip – especially off the quicks.

One very good Test, one poor one. It’s like that at the start of your career. Looked the goods in the opener, and will play a part in India.

131 runs at 65.5; 9 catches, 1 stumping

Has never kept better in Test cricket, and batted with real control, especially in the chase. Is really looking the business in Tests now and will be missed in India.

A couple of vital wickets in the first Test, but offered the least control of the four fast bowlers. Not offering quite enough with bat or ball, but is never quiet for long.

Tricky to judge. Finished with more wickets than anyone but Embuldeniya, but experienced long barren periods and was the beneficiary of some generous batting. But he still took those wickets – and contributed vital runs in the Second Test.

Bowled better than Bess, but still didn’t provide quite as much control as England would want. Came in very cold and produced a creditable performance. Will be better for it.

Had to wait for his wickets, and three was less than he deserved. Can claim a couple of assists for roughing Sri Lanka up. Deserves a bowl when conditions are more helpful.

Magnificent in his only Test. Was very difficult to score off, and got inventive to take his wickets.

Picked up where Broad left off and, on a flatter pitch, perhaps bowled even better. Was a masterful display from a special bowler.
