England’s World Cup qualifer in Albania at risk of being cancelled

ngland‘s World Cup qualifier in Albania on Sunday is at risk of being cancelled because of fears over police security.

Gareth Southgate’s side are due to face Albania in a World Cup qualifier in the Albanian capital Tirana on Sunday.

But the city’s police chiefs have told the Albanian Football Association (AFA) that the match cannot go ahead in a row over safety.

The match at the Air Albania stadium will take place behind closed doors but nearby bars and restaurants are expected to be full with no lockdown measures in place in Albania.

A statement from the AFA said: “Today in the Albanian Football Association a letter arrived from the Local Police Directorate of Tirana which states they cannot guarantee the taking of measures before, during and after the Albania v England match.

“Faced with the situation where the state authorities did not react after the request of the AFA for the release of spaces on the perimeter of the national stadium, we request urgent response to these structures.

“The cancellation of the Albania v England match would have catastrophic consequences for the image of our country, the national team and in general for Albanian football.”
