The gulf in class between the two local rivals is clear for all to see – and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is desparate to address that in this summer’s transfer window.
A new centre-back to partner Harry Maguire has been high up the United boss’ wish list for a while, but his plans may be altered in light of Eric Bailly’s decision over signing a new contract.
Reinforcements in attack are also required, and the Red Devils are linked with a Slavia Prague forward who has shone domestically and on the European stage this season.
Elsewhere, Solskjaer is keen to bring another former United goalkeeper back to Old Trafford amid their faltering bid to re-sign West Brom’s Sam Johnstone.
All of that in Tuesday’s Manchester United transfer round-up.
Bailly to pen new deal
Eric Bailly has decided to commit his future to Manchester United after months of speculation over his contract situation.
The centre-back has one year remaining on his current deal and he is believed to be unhappy with his lack of opportunities this season.
He has made just eight appearances in the Premier League, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has handed him assurances over his role going forward.
That’s according to the Manchester Evening News , which adds the 27-year-old has decided to pen a four-year contract extension.

Red Devils targeting Slavia ace
Manchester United are keeping tabs on Slavia Prague forward Abdallah Sima with a view to a summer transfer, claims the Manchester Evening News .
The versatile 19-year-old has scored 19 goals this season and was on the scoresheet as the Czech club knocked Leicester out of the Europa League last month.
Sima has three years remaining on his contract with Slavia Prague and usually operates as a right winger, although his long-term future is said to be at centre-forward.
The teenager made his debut for Senegal in the goalless draw with Congo in March, coming off the bench to partner Liverpool star Sadio Mane in attack.
Heaton linked with Old Trafford return
Manchester United will turn to Aston Villa goalkeeper Tom Heaton if they are unable to convince Sam Johnstone to return to Old Trafford.
That’s according to The Sun , which notes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen to bring in an experienced shot-stopper this summer.
Veteran Lee Grant, 38, is expected to depart at the expiry of his contract and the Red Devils are keen on West Brom stalwart Johnstone, 28, who spent nine years on United’s books.
But they could turn to Heaton as an alternative target, with the 35-year-old playing second fiddle to Emiliano Martinez at Villa Park.
The former England goalkeeper came through the academy ranks with United before ending his eight-year association with the club in 2010.
