Ferdinand recalls Joel Glazer’s 2005 promise and makes plea to Man Utd’s owners

Rio Ferdinand has told the Glazers to front up and face the music with disgruntled Manchester United supporters.

United’s Premier League clash with Liverpool at Old Trafford was suspended on Sunday, after hundreds of fans demonstrated outside – and inside the stadium.

The Glazers have been deeply unpopular for a number of years, with protests stretching back to the point they purchased the club back in 2005.

Much of the anger has come in from the way that debt has been leveraged against the club, whilst the family have taken dividends from profits.

But the final straw with fans appears to have been last month’s attempt to join the now disbanded European Super League, without any communications with supporters.

There were huge protests outside Old Trafford against Man Utd’s owners

Co-owner Joel Glazer issued an apology, one which has been firmly rejected and United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has admitted the club needs better communication.

But asked if that was possible, Red Devils legend Ferdinand suggested that the fact it took almost 16 years for Joel to speak out, shows that is unlikely.

“I’ve pulled a quote up from Joel Glazer from MUTV when they bought the club in 2005: ‘Fans are the life-blood of the club, people want to know what’s happening – we will be communicating’,” he told BT Sport.

“And then they didn’t speak to us until two weeks ago. I mean, it just shows you that quote, was just like ,’we’ll come in, get in under the carpet and then we’ll just see how it goes’.

Asked how that quote highlighted the Glazers’ opinion on owning a football club, Ferdinand added: “It shows me 100 per cent, considering what they tried to do with the Super League a couple of weeks ago, it shows me they thought they were buying a franchise or something they could turn into a franchise.

“They don’t realise they bought a club steeped in history and a huge part of that is being part of the community. The community is the bedrock at that football club and all football clubs in this country. That’s what they don’t understand. It’s a different culture.”

Joel’s brother Avram has been approached on several occasions about the club’s situation and Ferdinand believes it is imperative for someone to now put their head above the parapet.

“You want to see a face, you don’t want a generic PR put-together quote that came out as an apology, that isn’t good enough.

“The people that are a part of this club and love football, they want to see a face now.

“Put your face out there, speak, take some questions. Immerse yourself into the club a little bit if you are really what you are saying you are.”
