Bruno Fernandes had an unwanted statistic after his late penalty miss cost Manchester United a point against Aston Villa.

United slumped to an uninspiring 1-0 defeat by Villa as they conceded to Kortney Hause’s late header and failed to create chances going forward.

The loss added to recent woes which saw them crash out the Carabao Cup and get their Champions League campaign off to a bad start.

Fernandes, usually the focal point of everything good that United do, struggled in this game, as did those around him.

One embarrassing statistic sums up the Portuguese attacker’s’ struggles.

Despite having six shots throughout the game, the high-risk, high-reward playmaker managed to get none on them on target.

That includes a penalty he skied over the bar.

This comes shortly after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer complained his team were not receiving penalties and seemed to suggest it was because of comments Jurgen Klopp had made.

Before the penalty was taken, Villa shot-stopper Emiliano Martinez could be seen urging Cristiano Ronaldo to take the spot-kick.

Fernandes previously scored a penalty against Martinez earlier this year in United’s 3-1 win over Villa.

As well as Fernandes inability to get shots on target, United struggled to create chances going forward with Villa having the best opportunities to pull ahead before their goal.

Fernandes was not the only Portuguese star who struggled this afternoon.

Of United’s 28 shots in the game, Ronaldo had four but did not trouble keeper Martinez with any as all were off-target.

Despite his barnstorming return to United, Ronaldo had a relatively quiet game and only Mason Greenwood looked dangerous in United’s team.

To worsen their struggles on the pitch, United lost a key defensive duo to injury.

Harry Maguire was taken off in the 66th minute after receiving treatment 12 minutes earlier and Luke Shaw limped off in the first half, adding to Solskjaer’s growing list of concerns.

The United boss has come under growing pressure as he struggles to deliver despite having one of Europe’s best squads.

A powerful header from Hause put Villa ahead in the 88th minute. However, the defender nearly gave the three points away after Edinson Cavani’s header hit his arm moments later.

Villa’s victory means United have slumped to two consecutive defeats at home without scoring.

In the league, coupled with Chelsea ’s defeat, it means rivals City pull ahead on goal difference whilst Liverpool have the chance to open up a three-point gap in their game against Brentford.

As United struggled, Villa impressed with a fearless performance that showed they could come to the Premier League ’s giants and take points.

Dean Smith’s side spent well over the summer to replace talisman Jack Grealish, who made the jump to the blue side of Manchester.

This game is Villa’s first win at Old Trafford since Gabriel Agbonlahor’s winner in 2009.

Dean Smith’s 3-5-2 caused United problems as marauding wing-backs Matty Cash and Matt Targett stretched the Red Devils.

Villa’s shock victory arguably came about because of United’s summer transfer business.

Usual starter Axel Tuanzebe was unable to face his parent club, meaning Hause was brought in in his stead to score the winner.
