The proposed European Super League was one of the divisive stories of the 2020-21 football season, and it wasn’t just supporters who came out strongly against the idea.

Six English clubs were named as potential founders, including last season’s top four, but fans pushed back against the announcement and plans for the competition were eventually shelved.

Manchester United fans were among those to make their issues known, and a number of players – including Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford and Luke Shaw – shared concerns about the breakaway league.

And now it has emerged that Portugal international midfielder Fernandes was reportedly prepared to walk away from the club if they joined the Super League, demonstrating the strength of feeling brought about by the proposals.

The no-relegation element of the Super League was reportedly a factor in Fernandes standing firm against the proposals.

The former Sporting CP midfielder shared a post from compatriot Daniel Podence at the time, adding the caption ‘dreams can’t be buy [sic]’.

And, according to a report from The Athletic , he ‘was said to feel so strongly he would have pushed to leave United had it gone through’.

England internationals Marcus Rashford and Luke Shaw were among the other opponents of the potential Super League, which was also slated to include European giants including Barcelona, Real Madrid and Juventus.

The Athletic reports that Shaw believed he and his colleagues had been treated like children, having not been included in the higher-ups’ decision to push ahead with Super League plans.

While the English clubs involved in the breakaway plans eventually pulled out, others have continued to push ahead .

Fernandes has remained a key component of Manchester United’s squad over the last few months, despite significant investment elsewhere.

He scored a hat-trick on the opening day of the season against Leeds United, and has barely missed a game since his £47m move from Portugal in January 2020.

The 27-year-old finished the 2020-21 season as United’s top scorer in all competitions, while his 59 Premier League games have brought 30 goals.

Fernandes played a part in Marcus Rashford’s goal for Man Utd against Atalanta

The midfielder was also part of Manchester United’s starting line-up for their Champions League match against Atalanta, setting up Rashford’s goal.

United were 2-0 down before Rashford halved the deficit, with Harry Maguire and Cristiano Ronaldo completing the turnaround.

The result leaves Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team top of their group on six points, having been in danger of ending the night at the bottom.
