This year’s January transfer window has been a much quieter affair than usual so far.
In 2020 Manchester United finally welcomed Bruno Fernandes to Old Trafford, while Odion Ighalo arrived as a deadline day loan.
Tottenham Hotspur brought Gedson Fernandes, Giovani Lo Celso and Steven Bergwijn to north London, and numerous other clubs made four or five signings during the 31-day window.
Fast-forward 12 months, and it’s a very different story.
Only eight clubs have welcomed any new players at all and only a handful of permanent deals have been struck, as the lack of crowds and a drop in revenue starts to bite in the Premier League.
However, there is still time for clubs to sign more players, and in 2021 they have an extra day.
When is transfer deadline day?
This year’s January transfer window will actually close at 11pm on Monday February 1.
This is because January 31 is a Sunday, so deadline day across Europe’s top leagues is pushed back to the Monday.
Of course, some last-minute signings could be completed after the 11pm deadline.
Between 9pm and 11pm clubs can submit deal sheets, confirming an agreement has been reached to sign a player and they need additional time to submit the remaining paperwork.
Deal sheets give clubs a further two hours – or until 1am on February 2 – to submit the documentation.
