Five Man Utd players at risk of axe after Europa League horror show

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could be set for a summer clear out after Manchester United were beaten by Villarreal in the Europa League final.

The tense penalty shootout loss showed there is still much work to be done for the Red Devils ahead of a potential Premier League title challenge next season.

The likes of Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes weren’t at their best, but they more than proven themselves on other occasions.

The same can not be said of some of the other players dangling on the periphery of the starting XI, with a fairly bloated squad not doing the business when it mattered.

Here are five United players who could get the chop this summer in light of the Europa League final defeat.

David de Gea started ahead of Dean Henderson in goal against Villarreal

Dean Henderson

Solskjaer opted to go with David de Gea over Dean Henderson for arguably the club’s most important game of the season.

That may have been due to the Spaniard’s experience, and while he didn’t have his finest performance in a United shirt, that nod appears to suggest that Solskjaer backs him to be the club’s No. 1 for next season.

It might not be the case that United sell Henderson permanently thanks to some solid showings between the stick this season, but another loan move can not be overlooked.

Alex Telles

Alex Telles did manage to get some pitch time in the final – though it was only to take a penalty – which he did confidently.

The Brazilian surely won’t settle for another year playing second string to Luke Shaw, who has only gotten better this season with some real competition driving him on.

So it’s job done for United when it comes to Telles, and for his career’s sake, it’s probably time to ship him on again to play regular football again.

Donny van de Beek

It’s been a sad state of affairs for Donny van de Beek, who many thought would light up the Premier League based on his showings for Ajax.

But the Dutchman didn’t even get onto the pitch on Wednesday night, showing Solskjaer clearly isn’t his biggest fan, despite some bright showings at times.

Whether it’s a loan move back to the Johan Cruijff ArenA or a permanent move elsewhere, Van de Beek needs to leave unless he’s promised a starting place next season.

Daniel James

11 Premier League starts says it all for Daniel James, who has seen his game time dry up this season following the emergence of Mason Greenwood as a regular starter.

Speedster James is still a dangerous player, and he would get into the majority of sides in the English top flight.

So maybe that is what the former Swansea man needs to do, with Leicester linked with the Wales international, especially if United do get their hands on Jadon Sancho.

Anthony Martial

The currently-injured Anthony Martial could well have slipped below Edinson Cavani in the pecking order up front going into next season after the Uruguayan showed the killer edge Martial has been looking for for years in the final with United’s only goal.

If United do manage to sign a new striker this summer, that would leave him third in line to start when he’s fit again, or back battling for a place on the wings which is more competitive than ever.

It has been mooted that Martial could be involved in some kind of deal to bring Harry Kane to the club from Tottenham, which would provide a fresh start for the Frenchman.
