Tyson Fury has cast doubt on a potential 2021 superfight with Anthony Joshua, claiming talks are “no further forward today than a year ago”.
The two British heavyweight champions have been on a collision course since Fury reclaimed the WBC version of the belt against Deontay Wilder last year.
Joshua meanwhile holds the IBF, WBA and WBO belts, meaning a bout would crown the first undisputed heavyweight champ since Lennox Lewis in 2000.
Talks have been ongoing for months with the belief that an announcement was imminent.
But the Gypsy King, speaking to ESPN has suggested that may still be premature, with the two camps still locked in negotiations over a number of aspects to do with the fight.
“They’ve had a full year to try and make this fight happen,” Fury said. “Since the last Wilder fight, even before the Wilder fight, they were talking about a fight potentially between me and Joshua.
“They’ve had a full year to make something happen and it hasn’t happened as of yet. It is what it is. We’re no further forward today than we were a year ago.
“The way [COVID-19] is at the moment, I don’t think [negotiations] got much to do with the fighters. It’s to do with the venue, date, place, site fees. It’s to do with everything but the fight itself.”
The 32-year-old has confirmed that whether he faces Joshua or not, he will definitely have two fights before the end of the year.
“If that fight doesn’t happen this summer, it’s got to happen sooner or later,” he added. “But Top Rank has to give me two fights this year. I will fight two times on ESPN. I don’t care who it is.
“If it’s not Joshua, we’re looking to fight in April or early May, and the end of the year. If it is Joshua, then June and the end of the year. Bang, bang. So, 2021 is looking bright.”
Fury’s comments come just hours after his potential opponent Joshua, hinted that there had been a positive update between the two camps.
On Tuesday, he posted on social media. “Another positive meeting with 258 Management. They’ve informed me things are shaping up nicely. They will be sharing the update with Eddie [Hearn] and you’ll be hearing from me soon.”
Speaking to Sky News, he then added: “I try not to do too much teasing. I had a catch-up with 258 Management, the great team I’ve been working with since I turned professional.
“They have been working in negotiations. They updated my promotional team, they updated me.”
