Euro 2020: Bale laughs off speculation over Wales future

Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale has suffered another injury setback – just days after making his comeback for Wales.

The 32-year-old hasn’t played for his club since August due to a hamstring complaint but represented his country during the recent internationals.

Bale played 45 minutes of Wales’ 5-1 victory against Belarus on Saturday and has picked up a calf injury.

The former Tottenham ace is expected to be out of action for between three to four weeks, further annoying the Spanish press.

Bale was slammed after playing for Wales, with the Spanish press insisting he should put his club ahead of his country.

“His attitude is unpresentable,” wrote journalist Antonio Romero before news of Bale’s latest injury emerged.

Reporter Miguel Martin Talavera added: “I think that if a player is injured and is out with his team, UEFA should change something there.”

If a player has a fitness concern heading into an international break, they usually stay at their club to continue their recovery.

Bale’s latest injury is a further blow to his relationship with Real, which has become strained in recent years.

The 100-cap international earns a reported £600,000-a-week and is believed to have taken home more than £6million since his last game.

He also antagonised the club in 2019 when he and his Wales team-mates famously held up a flag that read: “Wales. Golf. Madrid. In that order.”

Bale spent the 2020-21 season on loan at former club Spurs and is widely expected to leave the Bernabeu when his contract expires in June.

And, it’s been claimed he could even spend the final six months of his deal at Tottenham.

New manager Antonio Conte has reportedly asked Spurs chief Daniel Levy to bring Bale back to the Premier League.

“Bale is making fun of Real Madrid,” wrote Marca journalist Jose Luis Hurtado on Tuesday. “It’s nothing new. He has been doing it for years…

“It is not known whether he is a golf player who plays football in his spare time or if he is a footballer who plays golf in his spare time.”

Bale insisted he was fit after the Belarus game. “There is no injury,” he said. “I am just happy to be back. It was a hard road to be back from injury but it was worth it.”

Speaking before the international break, Real manager Carlo Ancelotti said: “He’s going to go to Wales and they will assess whether he’s fit or not.

“It’ll be down to how the player trains there. Bale is fine and it’s clear it’s very important he feels right training after two months out and whether he’s feeling confident.

“It’s not his best period here but the fans will not forget what he’s done… If he is right when he comes back from international duty and he deserves to play, he will play.”
