Gareth Bale’s agent Jonathan Barnett has criticised the way Real Madrid fans have treated his client after more than eight years of service in the Spanish capital.

Barnett was surrounded by reporters at Madrid airport when he gave his scathing assessment on the Los Blancos faithful, who have long had a difficult relationship with the 32-year-old forward.

The agent revealed that he does not care how Bale is viewed by supporters in the city and slammed the way they have conducted themselves towards the the Welshman in recent years.

Some sections of the Real Madrid support went out of their way to hurl abuse at Bale on the road next to the club’s Valdebebas training centre.

Gareth Bale is not a particularly popular figure among Real Madrid fans

“I don’t, why should I care?” Bale’s agent told Spanish outlet El Chiringuito when asked if he considers the opinion of the Real Madrid fanbase.”

“I think they’ve been disgusting to Gareth Bale,” Barnett added.

Bale’s future at the club has been up for debate in recent months, particularly after the forward spent a season away from the Santiago Bernabeu spotlight last term.

The Welshman re-joined his former side Tottenham Hotspur for a season-long loan, but things failed to pan out the way both Bale and Spurs would have hoped.

A late resurgence in form saw him bag 11 Premier League goals during his first campaign back in the Premier League since he left White Hart Lane in the September of 2013.

However, Bale spent much of his time back in north London on the bench under Jose Mourinho, the Portuguese coach clearly deeming the four-time Champions League winner surplus to requirements.

Barnett was later pressed on speculation surrounding his client’s future, but kept his cards close to his chest.

“We have to wait and see [if he’ll stay for next season],” Barnett replied.

“He lives here and his family are here. He loves Madrid.”

Injuries have often plagued Bale’s time at Madrid, though fans have rarely been patient with him in his recovery process.

Barnett again struggled to understand the complaints made by Madrid supporters over their £80m man being side-lined yet again.

“It’s unfortunate, but he had to play for Wales as it was very important for the World Cup,” the agent claimed.

“It’s an injury that could happen to anybody, but unfortunately it happened to him.”

Bale has made just three appearances in a Real Madrid shirt this season, the opening three of the La Liga campaign.
