Gareth Southgate recalled Phil Foden to his squad – but warned all of his England players they must stay out of trouble in lockdown.
Southgate said it was now “water under the bridge” for Foden and Mason Greenwood but did not pick the Manchester United forward purely on form for England’s treble header with Republic of Ireland, Belgium and Iceland.
Manchester City star Foden and Greenwood were left out last month after being sent home from Iceland in disgrace for breaking protocols while Tammy Abraham, Ben Chilwell and Jadon Sancho also had to report up late for breaking Government guidelines by attending a party.
England boss Southgate said: “The situation is water under the bridge for sure because we have moved on and both the boys are available as far as we are concerned to pick.
“There’s no sort of carryover from what happened in September. That’s done.
“But they don’t come as a pair. Phil has had quite a lot of football with his club most recently and Mason has had less game time with United.”
Covidiots Abraham, Chilwell and Sancho actually attended a surprise birthday party for Abraham while Jack Grealish, Mason Mount, Declan Rice and Kyle Walker all fell foul of guidelines in the first lockdown.
Southgate added: “We want to be going into next week’s camp just able to focus on football as much as we possibly can and it would be very helpful for all of us if the players recognise that over the weekend.
“I think that we had some very good conversations as a group last time, not only about the current situation but also responsibilities and the attention that comes upon you as an England player.
“This is a unique time in that the last time the players didn’t actually go out, they stayed in – but of course staying in with others isn’t an option currently which normally you would be encouraging people to do.
“The rules for everybody in the country are very different and we have got to recognise that we are in a privileged position to be able to continue to do our job and that others aren’t as fortunate at this moment in time to be able to.”
