Gary Lineker facing backlash for message to Piers Morgan after he quits GMB

Gary Lineker is facing a Twitter backlash following his message of support to Piers Morgan after the Good Morning Britain presenter sensationally quit.

Morgan has left the show after six years after ITV received as many as 41,000 complaints about his on-air comments about Meghan Markle.

The 55-year-old was dismissive with remarks regarding the Duchess of Sussex’s mental health that she made in an interview with Oprah Winfrey.

Ofcom launched an investigation into whether he had broken the UK broadcasting code.

But before they could deliver an outcome ITV released a statement confirming Morgan has decided to quit the show.

Gary Lineker’s Piers Morgan message has received backlash.

An ITV statement read: “Following discussions with ITV, Piers Morgan has decided now is the time to leave Good Morning Britain.

“ITV has accepted this decision and has nothing further to add.”

Moments after the news broke, Match of the Day presenter Lineker took to Twitter to send Morgan a message of support.

He tweeted: “Whether it’s a football manager, a television presenter or any profession for that matter, it’s always sad when someone loses their job.

“@piersmorgan is excellent at what he does and I’m sure he’ll be back on the telly soon.”

But his post received a backlash from Twitter community. One user asked if his post was a joke to which he replied: “No.”

Prior to the news breaking, Morgan tweeted a GIF of a clock with the caption “Tick Tock”, clearly teasing the news.
