Solskjaer gives verdict on Man Utd’s draw at Southampton

Gary Neville has poured cold water on Manchester United’s chances of Premier League glory due to his lingering doubts over their summer transfer business compared to that of their rivals.

The Red Devils recovered after Fred’s own-goal to draw 1-1 at Southampton on Sunday afternoon, but failed to find a winner after Mason Greenwood drew them level.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is yet to unleash his two marquee summer signings for their full debuts, with Jadon Sancho coming off the bench and Raphael Varane an unused substitute at St Mary’s.

But former right-back Neville does not believe the duo are capable of transforming United into title contenders.

“My gut feeling is no, they won’t have the same impact as (Virgil) Van Dijk and Alisson to get them up to that 95 point mark that we’ll need to win the league,” Neville told Sky Sports when asked whether United will compete for the title.

Chelsea, we’ve seen what they’re doing with (Romelu) Lukaku, Van Dijk has come in for Liverpool, (Manchester) City have got (Jack) Grealish and they’re in for Kane.

“If City get Kane I think there’s a massive problem for Manchester United.

“I’m struggling to understand why United aren’t going that extra step in the transfer window.

“Sancho for £73million was last year’s money. United have always gone after the best English player in the Premier League historically.

“(Anthony) Martial, (Daniel) James, (Jesse) Lingard, you’re talking about getting some money in there, offloading wages.”

After admitting United have a cause for major concern if cross-town rivals City sign Kane, Neville questioned why the Red Devils are not pursuing the Tottenham striker.

He added: “I don’t know why they’re not going for Harry Kane this week. I think Harry Kane gets them up to that 95 point mark.

“They’re going to have to replace (Edinson) Cavani and Martial next summer. Martial isn’t going to do it, Cavani is out of contract in a year.

“They’re going to have to buy a centre-forward at some point, why not get the man now and give Ole the impetus to get to that 95 points. I don’t think they can with Sancho and Varane.”

Old Trafford chiefs are believed to be weighing up a third marquee signing of the summer which would take their spending far beyond the £113million they have spent on Sancho and Varane.

While West Ham midfielder Declan Rice has long been on their radar, Neville would like to see United sign a striker.

Solskjaer’s side were recently dealt a boost in their pursuit of Erling Haaland, but it appears highly unlikely they will move for the Borussia Dortmund striker this summer.
