British no1 Cameron Norrie saw off Jiri Lehecka in three sets 6-1 2-6 6-1 and Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski triumphed 6-4 6-2 against Tomas Machac and Jiri Vesely in a winner-takes-all doubles showdown after Dan Evans had lost the opening singles clash to Machac, who triumphed 6-2 7-5.
Leon Smith’s side now look set to face either Germany or Novak Djokovic’s Serbia in the quarters on Tuesday.
“Today was tough. You look at the rankings and people think it is straightforward but it is never like that in the Davis Cup,” captain Smith told the BBC.
“I’m thrilled for these guys [Salisbury and Skupski]. To come out and play as well as they did speaks volumes. We asked for passion, determination and the quality comes after that. I’m really proud of them.”
