Lou DiBella reacts to George Kambosos beating Teofimo Lopez

Teofimo Lopez and George Kambosos Jr were taken to hospital in New York following their 12-round world title fight last night.

Kambosos pulled off one of the upsets of the year when he dethroned unified champion Lopez in his hometown, dropping him in the first round on his way to a split-decision victory.

Lopez insisted after the fight that he had won the bout, but two judges’ scorecards disagreed, and the belts will now head back to Australia with Kambosos.

But first, both men will nurse their injuries from a fight of the year candidate that saw them both severely bloodied and on the canvas before the championship rounds.

Promoter Lou DiBella, who takes care of Kambosos’ career, has insisted that the Sydney native will take some time out after returning to his home country, and will spend the next few weeks mourning his grandfather George, who passed away two months ago.

“George fought a near-perfect fight, he was brilliant,” DiBella told Mirror Fighting . “Teofimo is a great fighter and by the way he fought like a warrior tonight.

“That was a great win for people who love underdogs everywhere – I told you it would be a fight!

“I knew that George was a world class fighter, but what he did tonight was he put everything together – he had a night for the ages, that’s the kind of performance people will be talking about in thirty years.”

Neither Kambosos nor Lopez made the post-fight press conference while the winner could head to Las Vegas to watch fellow world champion Devin Haney in action next weekend.

Asked what was next for the new unified world champion, DiBella said that he will now take “the biggest possible fights”.

“First of all, he won,” DiBella explained. “He’s the man.

“He’s going to decide, ultimately, what’s next – is Devin Haney the biggest money fight possible? Is Devin Haney the biggest thing that’s going to be there for him?”

Haney currently holds the WBC lightweight world title, the one stumbling block to Kambosos being considered the undisputed champion.

Kambosos is now the WBC “franchise” champion, but that title is not recognised as a world title that can be unified with the WBA, WBO and IBF to officially become undisputed.

But DiBella insists that Kambosos is the top fighter in the division now, and will be a massive star when he returns to the ring, with a bout in his home country a possibility.

The bout played out in front of a capacity crowd at the Hulu Theater in Madison Square Garden, with a number of world champions in attendance including Demetrius Andrade and Jessica McCaskill.

Andrade, the middleweight champion who is currently angling for a fight with Jermall Charlo, said that the bout was “great for boxing”.

“It was two guys who said what they were going to do and they went out and did it,” Andrade told Mirror Fighting.

“Nothing got in the way and it was a great performance for the fans in attendance and it was a great thing to see.

“Hard work, dedication and commitment sometimes beat talent and I’m not saying Lopez didn’t work hard or anything, but he went in there and took it a little too personal.

“The better man won tonight.”

McCaskill. the undisputed welterweight champion, felt that Lopez’s corner let him down, with slow reactions to his injuries and poor calls.

She was host on the DAZN broadcast, and was privy to audio that fans in the arena couldn’t hear.

“I felt like Teofimo’s corner was giving him kind of a raw deal,” McCaskill told Mirror Fighting . “They were slow to get ice on his face, there was a lot of swelling around his eye, he got a cut and they couldn’t stop the bleeding.

“So a lot of that is going to affect you.”
