Giroud makes perfect hat-trick admission after scoring four in Chelsea win

Olivier Giroud scored four as Chelsea enjoyed a glorious night in Europe.

Giroud scored a perfect hat trick – left foot, right foot and header – and then grabbed a late penalty.

But he admitted that he did not know what a perfect hat trick was until two years ago.

Chelsea veteran Giroud, 34, said: “I didn’t know until two years ago that you call it a perfect hat-trick when I did it against Kiev.

“When you win 4-0, Champions League away game, it’s always a great feeling.

“We took the game on the front foot, we were efficient and good for me to score four goals! We play football to make our history and so I am to score goals.”

Delight for the Blues

But Giroud admitted that he does not know whether he will keep his place against Leeds on Saturday even after his remarkable four goal haul.

“Let me enjoy the night, we will rest and then I will see the gaffer’s plan,” said Giroud who insists he is desperate to see fans back at Stamford Bridge this weekend.

Giroud and Lampard celebrate his fourth goal

“Football is not the same sport without fans, the passion is not the same without the fans and we are looking forward to Saturday and we hope for a nice welcome.”

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard praised Giroud’s performance and professionalism as his side enjoyed a fourth straight win in the Champions League for the first time since they won it in 2012.

Lampard said: “It was an amazing performance to score four goals at this level and also the quality of the goals.

“He is the ultimate pro when you see his positivity, his numbers in Europe and for France. He is such a great sign for young players.

“I do like superstitions but I don’t like talking about them. I was not aware of that (winning sequence) but the level goes up from here. We have to sustain these levels and that’s the next test for us.”
