Serge Gnabry has already declared he’s “always a Gooner” as Arsenal and Real Madrid prepare to battle for his signature.

The Bayern Munich star will soon enter the final 12 months of his deal and could be free to leave the Allianz Arena for nothing next summer. As a result some of Europe’s biggest clubs are circling with the Gunners and Los Blancos both tracking the winger’s situation.

Madrid have missed out on Kylian Mbappe after he decided to extend his stay with PSG following months of discussions. They must now turn their focus elsewhere and Gnabry is on their radar, according to Bild, as Carlo Ancelotti looks to strengthen his forward options.

The German could reject Bayern’s latest offer which would open doors for him were he to see out his contract – much like David Alaba did in Munich before heading to Spain. Arsenal though are another option, albeit not as glamorous as a move to the Bernabeu.

However Gnabry has previous in north London, having spent several years with the Gunners. The winger left Arsenal permanently in 2016 seeking more game time but has previously spoken highly of his former club, who are in need of firepower.

in a 2019 interview with Pro Direct he said on his exit: “It was the hardest decision but I think it worked out well because I wanted to play. But as a club, Arsenal are top, top.” Then when speaking to CBS Sports a year later, the German reaffirmed his feelings, naming Arsenal as “the favourite” if he did return to England.

Serge Gnabry faces an uncertain future at Bayern

Gnabry is seeking financially parity with some of the club’s top earners. Bayern recently handed out new deals to the likes of Thomas Muller and Manuel Neuer with reports claiming Hasan Salihamidzic cited salary issues, which Gnabry did not appreciate.

In April Oliver Kahn, who is the club’s CEO, said on on Sport1 . regarding Gnabry’s contract: “We are in talks. Serge knows what we as a club ask of him, also in terms of performance. He is in a process of reflection. As soon as things become clearer we will announce it.” However, last month fellow Bayern chief Uli Hoeness expressed his frustration, which suggested the Bavarians had done all they could.

“It’s the same situation as with Sule. I think he has a great offer from Bayern and now has to make a decision,” he told RTL . “Your media drives me crazy with these free transfer things. What do you want to do? Should you stuff the players with money until they say yes or maybe choke on it?”
