Granit Xhaka sends transfer message to Arsenal with Jose Mourinho comment

Granit Xhaka insists he remains open to having a conversation about a transfer after confessing he is aware of interest from Jose Mourinho at Roma.

The Arsenal midfielder has previously been linked with the exit door but was persuaded to stay at the Emirates by Mikel Arteta.

Xhaka has continued to be a regular under the Spaniard and has highlighted his value by playing at full-back this term.

Despite that rumours of a move away continue and Arsenal are looking to overhaul their squad this summer and raise transfer funds.

Xhaka remains open to discussing his future with the Gunners but for now is focussed on this summer’s European Championships.

“Of course I read the rumours too“, he told Swiss daily Blick.

“But now I’m one hundred per cent focused on the national team. That’s more important than Arsenal or rumours right now.

“I have another two years on my contract in London and at Arsenal, they know what they have in me.

“When the time comes and we can, may or must talk about a transfer, I’ll be here.“

Mourinho was axed from the white side of north London after Tottenham showed him the door in March.

It didn’t take him long to find work though as Roma swiftly came calling and the Special One will start in the coming weeks.

He will want to bring in certain players to bolster the squad and Xhaka is fully aware of what Mourinho is capable of.

The 28-year-old remained coy about his links with Roma, but wasn’t shy if expression admiration for the two-time European Cup winner.

“Honestly, I didn’t hear what Mourinho said, but that makes you proud“, the midfielder added.

“Everyone knows Mourinho and what he has achieved. Mourinho knows how to win trophies.

“You can now see what work I have done over the past few years.“

Arteta though has continued to back Xhaka publicly, even when he was sent-off in a moment of madness against Burnley in December.

He said: “What I can say about Granit is that his professionalism and his commitment with the club and with his teammates is maximum.

He knows and we know that he had a moment where he lost it and I know the reason why, but what I cannot do is just throw everything that he has done away just because he made a mistake.”
