Harry Kane defends Southgate’s tactics after England defeat in Belgium

Southgate stuck with his 3-4-3 system in Leuven, and his tactics drew criticism as England suffered a defeat that ended their hopes of qualifying for the Nations League finals.

The Three Lions dominated the second half but struggled to create many clear-cut chances.

Asked if the Southgate’s formation stunts England going forward, Kane told Sky Sports: “I don’t think so.

“I think with the wing-backs playing as high as they do and then one of the midfielders coming into a higher role as well, we’ve definitely got enough in attack to cause problems as we did today.

“We were dominant. We were unlucky to concede the two goals, a deflection and I don’t think the second was a free-kick. [There were] a lot of positives to take but it will give us confidence.

“If we play like this going forward, we will win the majority of games for sure.”

“Jack Grealish is a fantastic player,” said Kane. “You can see his qualities on the ball.

“I am sure he will get plenty of opportunities in an England shirt.”
