Harry Maguire identifies problem in Man Utd’s win over West Ham

Harry Maguire admits Manchester United struggled to put their chances away as they edged past West Ham in the FA Cup.

The Red Devils needed extra time to get the job done against the Hammers, with Scott McTominay netting the winner in the 97th minute.

United managed 17 shots on the night, five of which were on target, but a combination of poor finishing and Lukasz Fabianski’s fine saves kept the hosts at bay at Old Trafford.

Club captain Maguire warned his teammates over their poor finishing but praised the way they bounced back from a disappointing draw with Everton at the weekend.

Maguire admits United were not clinical enough against the Irons

“I thought the performance was good,” the England international told BBC Sport . “We could have been a bit more clinical.

“They had a spell but we dealt with it a lot better than at the weekend and we felt we got the win we deserved in the end.”

Maguire added: “We got the win we deserved in the end. Saturday [against Everton ] was tough.

“We were so disappointed, so it was great spirit and great mentality to come back and get our heads back up.”

In the 3-3 draw with Everton, United let a commanding 2-0 half-time lead slip, though they restored their advantage through Scott McTominay.

But Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side were sunk by a dramatic added-time free kick, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin equalising at the eleventh hour to prevent United clinching all three points.

“Last Saturday was tough – especially in the second half,” said Maguire as he reflected on the draw with the Toffees. “We were so disappointed with conceding with the last kick.”

“We showed great spirit and a good mentality to come back and perform. We know it’s a long season and tonight was perfect. It’s important to get through.”
