Liverpool have been handed a boost after Harvey Elliott provided a positive update on his recovery from injury.

The 18-year-old is expected to be sidelined for several months after sustaining a serious ankle injury in the 3-0 win over Leeds United on September 12.

The teenager was left with a fractured and dislocated left ankle following a challenge from Pascal Struijk after his foot was caught under the Dutchman in the second half at Anfield.

Struijk was controversially sent off by referee Craig Pawson for the innocuous challenge, which has seen him serve a three-game ban, despite Elliott insisting the decision to dismiss the defender was “wrong”.

There was understandably some concern for Elliott after he was stretchered off the pitch in agony and later taken to hospital.

But he was in good spirits after posting an update from his hospital bed before the game had finished to the relief of Liverpool fans.

And his latest update on his road to recovery will no doubt delight Reds fans, who are itching to see the highly-rated starlet back in action as soon as possible.

The youngster uploaded a photo of himself to his 1.2million followers working on an exercise bike in the gym at Liverpool’s training complex.

And he captioned the Instagram image with a short but positive message: “Step by step, day by day.”

Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount was among the 110,000 users who ’liked’ the post, with Liverpool’s reserve goalkeeper Adrian posting a message of support, writing: “Vamosss”.

Elliott underwent ankle surgery to repair the damage in London three weeks ago, with Liverpool hopeful he will return before the end of the season.

But club doctor, Jim Moxon, has insisted they will not rush Elliott’s run to action.

“We won’t put pressure on him by setting a specific timeframe beyond being able to say with confidence we expect him to feature again later in the season following our rehab programme,” he told the club’s website.

Jurgen Klopp had spoken about Elliott’s rise in recent months after impressing on loan at Blackburn Rovers last season before returning to his parent club over the summer.

The winger was included in their pre-season plans and Elliott’s displays in midfield prompted Klopp to start him ahead of Naby Keita and Curtis Jones.

“We try to improve and we really try to develop and for that, the door is very open for everybody to be part of that,” Klopp said in September.

“So far it worked out really well and with Harvey, it was nice to see how naturally he did that.

“A young player like him, you don’t fiddle with 5,000 pieces of information. You just let him play and have a look. OK [you see] what is natural and where does he need advice.

“He didn’t need a lot of advice, it was really nice to see. He had a full pre-season, did all the sessions and that is why he played.

“Hendo played the position and Naby came in on the other side and played a super game offensively, really dominant, and all that stuff. So it is nice to see that we can do that.”

Liverpool have managed to soldier on without Elliott, going unbeaten in their first seven matches of the Premier League campaign, and Klopp’s side currently sit in second in the table behind Chelsea.
