Hollie Doyle and Tom Marquand’s rides confirmed for Happy Valley

Hollie Doyle and Tom Marquand have had their rides confirmed for the Longines International Jockeys’ Championship as they bid to round off a brilliant year.

UK racing’s power couple are among 12 jockeys taking part in Wednesday’s event at Happy Valley Racecourse in Hong Kong.

They will be up against the likes of Joao Moreira and Pierre-Charles Boudot competing for the HK$500,000 top prize over four races.

The event comes just days after Doyle was shortlisted for BBC Sports Personality of the Year, following her first Royal Ascot success and another record winners’ haul for a female jockey.

Marquand took his first Classic race aboard Galileo Chrome in the Pertemps St Leger at Doncaster.

Earlier in the year, he celebrated his first Group One triumph on Addeybb in Australia and partnered the same horse to victory on Qipco British Champions Day.

The meeting saw Doyle, the third woman to take part in the championship, reach the number one spot at the highest level.

The pair are joined by their weighing room colleagues Ryan Moore and Will Buick in the points-based competition, which has six riders from Hong Kong and six from the rest of the world.

Joao Moreira won it in 2012 and believes the track presents some challenges for the visiting team.

“I would describe Happy Valley as one of the most difficult places to adapt and get used to but I also don’t underestimate these guys that are coming because if they’ve been selected, there are no doubts they are good jockeys and they are going to get used to it quick and do the best they can on this track straight away,” he said.

Royal Racer is one of Moreira’s mounts – and he hopes the five-year-old can secure the second leg of the series, a class 4 contest over 1650m.

“If he’s able to able produce what he did last time, I think he’s going to be a very hard horse to beat and I would have him as my best ride of the jockeys’ challenge,” he said.
