How England could line-up against Austria in Euros warm-up

H

aving named his final 26-man England squad for Euro 2020, Gareth Southgate‘s preparations for the tournament begin tonight with a warm-up friendly against Austria.

While Southgate has now settled on his squad for the Euros, that does not mean he necessarily has his first-choice XI for the tournament available.

Harry Maguire is a major doubt for the opener against Croatia on June 13, and will definitely miss Wednesday’s friendly.

With 11 of his squad also involved in either the Europa League or Champions League finals last week, some of those players will be afforded a rest while others get up to speed more quickly.

That means we could see an experimental lineup from Southgate against Austria, while Lingard will likely start despite missing out on the Euros squad.

England’s Chelsea and Manchester City players will likely be on the bench with a view to bringing them in against Romania on Sunday, with that game likely to see something close to resembling the first-choice XI which will start versus Croatia.

With Maguire set to miss that game, Southgate may opt for a three-man defence in front of Jordan Pickford. John Stones would ideally be rested given he played in the Champions League Final, but he may play given he will likely be a starter against Croatia.

On the flanks, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Bukayo could provide width with Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham in central midfield.

The likes of Jordan Henderson and Jack Grealish are expected to come off the bench as they build their fitness following long injury layoffs, while a number of likely starters for the tournament should also appear as second-half substitutes.

England predicted XI: Pickford; Stones, Coady, Mings; Alexander-Arnold, Bellingham, Rice, Saka; Lingard, Kane, Foden

Injury list: Maguire (ankle)

Doubt: Henderson (fitness), Grealish (fitness), Sancho
