How we expect Scotland to line up in World Cup play-off

athan Patterson is the only member of Scotland’s squad who will miss Wednesday’s World Cup play-off against Ukraine.

Steve Clarke confirmed ahead of the huge showdown at Hampden Park that the Everton defender has failed to recover from an ankle operation two months ago.

Steve Clarke said on Tuesday: “Everyone except Nathan [is fit]. Nathan has run out of time a little bit for the first game.

“So Nathan won’t be involved in the first game but everyone else is good to go.”

Arsenal’s Kieran Tierney was not called up for the internationals while coming back from a knee injury while Ryan Jack and Kenny McLean also miss out. Rangers midfielder Jack was replaced by Allan Campbell earlier in the week due to a calf problem.

In the absence of Tierney, it remains to be seen who Scotland boss Clarke will opt for on the left-side of his defence, behind Andrew Robertson.

Grant Hanley, Liam Cooper, Jack Hendry and John Souttar are all competing to form the defence while Aaron Hickey would be a more like-for-like, if inexperienced, replacement for Tierney.

Scott McTominay will be out to beat Billy Gilmour to a spot in midfield with Ryan Christie and Stuart Armstrong competing to complete the frontline.

Predicted Scotland XI: Gordon; Hendry, Hanley, Cooper; O’Donnell, McTominay, McGregor, Robertson; McGinn, Armstrong; Adams.
