Former Barcelona captain Xavi Hernandez has revealed that Sir Alex Ferguson once tried to sign him for Manchester United.

The former midfield maestro spent 17 seasons in the first-team squad at the Camp Nou before exiting for Qatari club Al Sadd in 2015.

Xavi – who now manages the Middle Eastern club having hung up his boots two years ago – has now recalled the time that United tried to secure his signature.

Now aged 41, he has also explained that he would be open to managing in England later in his career and he now sees the Premier League differently than he did in the past.

Xavi went on to become the Catalan club’s all-time record appearance holder – playing 767 first-team matches for the Blaugrana, a record which was surpassed by Lionel Messi earlier this year – but an attempt from Ferguson had tried to persuade him to move to Old Trafford.

Among his many glittering achievements at Barca, Xavi won four Champions League titles – including against United in the finals of 2009 and 2011, so it is little surprise Ferguson rated his abilities so highly.

Xavi explained in an interview with The Times : “Manchester United approached me once through Sir Alex Ferguson’s brother, but my answer was very quick.

“I was focused on Barca, my priority was only Barca. I am a fan from the very inside of myself and that’s why was impossible for me to leave.

“Now I see it differently. Everyone tells me that the Premier League is wonderful, a great league to work in. First of all, for the passion with how they live the game. How they treat and respect you, the atmosphere and the stadiums.

“So why not? I could see myself [managing] in England, definitely, it’s one of the things I’d like to experience in my career.”

Xavi made a total of 1,078 senior appearances across his playing career – including 133 caps for Spain, with whom he won a World Cup and two European Championship titles – before moving into coaching at Al Sadd.

The former central midfielder also spoke highly of England’s performance in Euro 2020 and had special praise for Manchester City ’s Phil Foden, whom he described as having ‘everything’.

He added: “I think he is an unreal talent for a lot of reasons. He has an amazing work rate, but also his decision-making is ace. He’s strong, quick, has a sense of goal, great passer and shooter… There’s everything in the pack.

“I would have loved to see more game time for Foden. When you have this number of talented players, all I can think of is putting them on the pitch. I understand it’s very tough to make changes with the squad Southgate had. There were a lot of options in his hands and only eleven could play. But it’s a pity to see so many special talents with not much playing time.”
