Inside Odegaard’s Arsenal training ground visit as Gunners ‘make approach’

Arsenal have reportedly made an approach for Real Madrid playmaker Martin Odegaard.

The Gunners are believed to be facing competition from at least one other Premier League club to sign the Norway international.

Odegaard, 22, visited Arsenal’s London Colney training ground as a 15-year-old back in December 2014, when clubs across Europe were vying for his signature.

The day before his 16th birthday, Odegaard toured the Gunners’ facilities after spending time working under Pep Guardiola at Bayern Munich.

At Arsene Wenger’s request, Odegaard took part in a training session before he was also shown around the Emirates Stadium.

Then playing for Stromsgodset in his homeland, Odegaard also visited Manchester United and Liverpool, describing the latter as his “dream club”.

But the player settled on joining Real Madrid in January 2015, moving to the Santiago Bernabeu for a fee in the region of £2.5million.

He has managed just 11 senior appearances in six years with Los Blancos, however, and has been loaned to three different clubs.

Real Madrid are willing to let Odegaard leave in search of regular football and Sky Sports reports Arsenal have made an approach to bring the attacking midfielder to the Emirates.

The report adds Gunners boss Mikel Arteta is an admirer of the 22-year-old, but warns there are plenty of other clubs monitoring the situation.

Odegaard has made nine appearances in La Liga or the Champions League this season despite missing much of the campaign through muscle injuries.

Arsenal are keen to bring in a creative midfielder before the transfer window shuts and have been linked with players across the continent.

It remains to be seen whether Real will accept the Gunners’ bid to bring Odegaard back to their training ground six years on from his visit.

At the time of his tour, Odegaard’s father, Hans Erik, claimed 30 clubs were vying for the youngster’s signature.

Among other interested parties were Manchester City, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Celtic, while then-Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers was full of praise for Odegaard.

“I know he’s a big talent, to be playing senior football at 15 and in a competitive league,” said Rodgers. “He’s got wonderful ability and wonderful talent.”
