Manchester United 1-0 Aston Villa: Rangnick reaction

Jamie Carragher has reiterated his belief that Cristiano Ronaldo will cause “as many problems as he solves” at Manchester United.

The Portuguese superstar, 36, returned to Old Trafford in August following a deadline day move from Italian outfit Juventus.

Statistically, Ronaldo has done well since re-joining United – scoring 14 goals in 21 appearances in all competitions.

The team, however, have regressed significantly during that time. United finished second in the Premier League last season but are now seventh in the table.

They’re also out of the EFL Cup and aren’t being tipped to win the Champions League, leaving them battling for FA Cup success.

Many believed Ronaldo’s return would make United a winning machine again, ending their five-year wait for silverware.

“I don’t see this going badly,” club legend and Ronaldo’s former team-mate Mikael Silvestre told talkSPORT in August.

“He’s a professional and everything he does is for the benefit of his performances, which means it’s going to be for the benefit for Man Utd.

“He will do everything he can to win trophies. He came to United to win trophies and I’m confident [that will happen].”

Speaking to the same outlet, fellow United icon Wes Brown added: “You have to believe we can [win the title this season].

“Look at the signings we’ve made this summer, they’re quality signings! You have to put Man Utd in the title race.”

Not everyone, however, was convinced by the decision. Many journalists and pundits questioned United’s decision to re-sign Ronaldo, including Carragher.

“For all the understandable euphoria at Old Trafford with the return of Cristiano Ronaldo, his signing causes as many problems as it solves,” said the Liverpool icon.

“Ronaldo could prove to be a better signing for the Premier League than for Man Utd.”

And, writing in his most recent column for The Telegraph, Carragher has further questioned United’s thinking behind the transfer.

“There is nothing about them; no passion, no emotion; every game seems flat; they lack energy and fluidity; the players are visibly not enjoying their football,” he wrote.

Carragher added: “I said from the outset that signing Ronaldo might expose more problems than it solved. That is proving correct, no matter what some of his ex-United teammates might say.

“That squad does not have the unity and discipline required to challenge [Manchester] City, Liverpool and Chelsea.”

In a recent interview with Sky Sports, Ronaldo urged his United team-mates to improve following their poor start to the season.

“Man Utd should win the league or be second or third. I don’t see any other position for Man Utd,” he said. “In my heart, I don’t accept that our mentality be less than being in the top three in the Premier League, in my opinion.

“I think to build up good things, sometimes you have to destroy a few things. So why not – new year, new life and I hope that Manchester can be the level that the fans want. They deserve that.”
